Job Overview

We are looking to appoint an ambitious lecturer in private law who can contribute to the delivery of our LLB (Hons) programme, which is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland, and also to carry out law teaching at a wider undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The National Student Survey for 2018 rated the subject area of law at 93% for overall satisfaction with their LLB programme, with teaching, learning opportunities and academic support all scoring above 85%. We have recently launched a highly successful Law Clinic, that offers free legal advice to the local community and we have plans to expand on this.

About the Role

Reporting to the Head of School and Head of Law Subject Group, you will provide teaching input to undergraduate and potentially postgraduate teaching while taking a leading role in fostering and developing the research culture within the law group through your own research and by mentoring others.

You will conduct individual and collaborative research projects within the Law, Finance and Accounting subject group, the Business School or elsewhere within the University, contributing to the Law research profile.

In addition, You will be expected to contribute to a Law Unit of Assessment submission in the forthcoming REF, as well as the production of high quality research outputs/outcomes with related impact and external research income generation.

You will be helping to develop and design Law programmes. You would also be expected to contribute to the development of distance learning and on-line learning material.  Some foreign travel in distance learning activities may be required.

Who We Are Looking For

All aspects of private law will be considered, but we are particularly interested in candidates with a strong research and teaching capability in one or more of the following fields: contract law, business and corporate law, and law of successions and trust.

You must have:

  • A doctoral level qualification in Law.
  • The ability to generate external funding for research projects.
  • The ability to produce research outputs of internationally excellent quality, including REF 3* and 4* publications, within two years of appointment.
  • Sufficient experience of teaching in law in a University setting.
  • A degree in Scots law or demonstrable evidence of the ability to teach Scots Law and lead modules in contract law, law of successions and trust, and teach on at least one other core area of the LLB programme.
